IoT Product Design and Development
Connected products designed, built and manufactured by one team: electronics, firmware, enclosure, connectivity and a secure way to update devices once they are in the field.
We design IoT products for startups and growing hardware companies, across industrial, environmental, consumer and light commercial applications. Our job is to get a connected product from idea to a fleet of working devices, and to make sure those devices can still be supported, secured and updated years after they ship.
What this includes
- IoT electronics, firmware and enclosure design
- Cellular (4G, LTE-M, NB-IoT), Wi-Fi, BLE and LoRaWAN
- Licensable secure OTA update system for SIMCom modems
- Example update server and web-based device tools
- CRA-ready security architecture
- Bridge manufacturing from 10 to 10,000 units
One studio from design to manufacture
Connected products fail at the seams: an antenna detuned by the enclosure, firmware that drains the battery the hardware was sized for, or a design that cannot be built at volume. We handle electronics, firmware, mechanical design and bridge manufacturing under one roof, so those seams are owned by one team. When your product is ready, we can manufacture from 10 to 10,000 units in our London facility and with vetted partners.
Choosing the right connectivity
Cellular (4G, LTE-M and NB-IoT), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy and LoRaWAN each solve different problems, and the wrong choice shows up later as running cost, battery life or coverage complaints. We pick connectivity against your deployment, data volumes and cost per device. Sometimes the right answer is to connect less: for The Tyre Collective we designed a data collection and offload approach that removed the need for an always-connected device, cutting running costs and SIM management.
Secure OTA updates, ready to license
Every connected product needs a safe way to fix bugs and security issues in the field. We have a working, secure over-the-air update system for products using SIMCom cellular modems. Firmware images are signed and verified before installation, written to a second flash bank, and only swapped in after the new image validates, with automatic rollback if it fails, so a bad update does not brick a deployed device. Device-to-server communication uses TLS with per-device certificates. It comes with example server code and web-based update tools for managing devices and rolling out releases. We license this system and adapt it to your hardware and backend for a fee, which is usually far quicker and cheaper than building one from scratch.
Built for the Cyber Resilience Act
The EU Cyber Resilience Act requires connected products sold in the EU to receive security updates through their support period, delivered securely and authenticated. Our OTA system was designed with those requirements in mind, and we design the rest of the device with secure boot, locked debug interfaces and documented update processes so that CRA compliance is built in rather than retrofitted. Our free CRA assessment tool will tell you where your product stands.
Low power and low running cost
For battery-powered devices, the radio usually dominates the power budget. We design duty cycling, connection strategy and data batching around a measured power budget, and verify battery life on real hardware with real network conditions rather than relying on datasheet figures.
Common questions
Can we license your OTA update system?
Yes. Our secure OTA system runs on products using SIMCom cellular modems and includes example server code and web-based update tools. We license it and adapt it to your hardware, firmware and backend for a fee. Get in touch with your platform details and we will tell you what adapting it would involve.
Do you build the cloud platform and app as well?
We design the device, its firmware and the update infrastructure, and provide example server code to get you started. For full cloud platforms, dashboards and mobile apps, we work alongside your software team or a partner, and define the device interface clearly so both sides can build in parallel.
Does my IoT product need to comply with the Cyber Resilience Act?
If it connects to a network or another device and is sold in the EU, very likely yes. The CRA applies to most products with digital elements, with obligations phasing in up to December 2027. Secure updates are a core requirement, which is why we treat OTA as part of the product design rather than an add-on.
